IBM Cognos 10 is here! IBM Cognos 10 was formally launched at the IOD conference in Las Vegas. C10 brings with it a wave of new features as well as some major fixes.
One of the most striking changes is to the delivery of BI to end users. It is clear to see that IBM has clearly thought about how they want to deliver BI. A number of new features allowing the end user to piece together key artifacts from multiple reports and bring them together in a new tool called "Business Insight".
Whilst still maintaining separation between the mainstream BI tools and the Metrics and Scorecarding more progress has been made in making IBM TM1 a more integral data source for the BI suite. Dynamic Query Mode which supports 3 OLAP data source (Oracle Essbase, SAP, and TM1), looks key to speeding up the user experience for users on a fact finding mission.
For IT being able to do "query diagnostics" as well as better monitoring of what is going on in the Reporting Plant have long been tasks that Administrators and Developers have had to refer to other tools i.e. Toad for Query interception to examine explain plans, to diagnose the effect of executing a particular query and identifying bottlenecks. The new tools in C10 allow these users to do these key tasks without having to leave the C10 products.
There are many other exciting features also exist including integration of SPSS, importing unstructured data, social networking (based on Lotus Connections). For the details of what else to expect take a look at the Whats New site
What next?
Harnessing the power of "cloud service"? |

Reporting from an In Memory Data Source.
With Cognos Acquiring Applix, and IBM acquiring Cognos The IBM Cognos toolset has flourished into a rich set of powerful and pervasive set of business intelligence tools. With the more recent offering from IBM Cognos the products have seen a new level of cohesion and interoperability. The TM1 product, inherited as part of the Applix acquisition, has proven itself to be a solid financial performance management tool, but seemed a little lackluster when it came to reporting. The power was there but nice webfront end just wasn't up to comparision to that offered in IBM Cognos 8. But then again IBM Cognos 8 and IBM Cognos Planning have been found to be much slower cumbersome products. So to bring the best of both of these workd together would be the ideal solution. And this is precisely what IBM Cognos have done. The power of an in-memory OLAP engine, that is far quicker than the old static filebased PowerPlay Cubes, is certainly proving to be invaluable. Being able to put Report Studio, Query Studio, and yes, Analysis Studio over TM1 really helps keep users wanting quick response times VERY VERY VERY happy!
Is a 3GB PowerCube, 3GB in memory (in TM1)?
No. Only the lowest level data is stored in memory. When TM1 is asked to aggregate it's superfast calculation engine, TurboIntegrator, rapidly kicks in and gives you an answer very quickly. That then gets cached incase it is needed again. Hence giving an even faster response time should you need it again.
Is In-Memory OLAP Paving the Way Ahead?
Whilst OLAP Cubes serve there purpose they seem to feel prehistoric in comparison to the new In-Memory technologies that are now on the market. But they are by no means redundant. After a certain time you will want to dump a large amount of historic data our of memory but would still like to slice and dice it... Putting a call out for old faithful... PowerPlay Transformer! And with PowerPlay Studio being brought in to help those Series 7 faithful off their dusty old plants... There is a solution to allow you to slice these cubes a bit faster than Analysis Studio.
Whilst in-memory is not the solution for everthing it gets you a lot closer to getting nearer to that nirvana of instant BI. |
